Toenail Surgery is a minor surgical procedure performed by Podiatrists to treat problematic nails. Such as painful and inflamed ingrowing or involuted (curved) and thickened nails. This procedure can also be used to remove fungal nails with the aim of healthy regrowth. For ingrown or involuted nails usually it only requires the offending slither to be removed (Partial Nail Avulsion), in other incidences it maybe required to remove the whole nail (Total nail Avulsion TNA).
An initial consultation with the Podiatrist is needed first to access the condition of the nail, medical history and suitability for the procedure.
During the procedure a local anesthetic is used to numb the toe and a torniquet applied to reduce blood flow for the procedure to be performed. The partial or whole nail is then lifted and removed and a chemical called phenol is applied to the nail matrix to prevent regrowth. If removing a fungal nail or there is a want for the nail to regrow then Phenol will not be used. The toe will then be dressed and dressings supplied for aftercare.
There is no pain during the procedure due to the use of anesthetic however afterwards slight throbbing maybe felt.
